Rivian made me do it! After placing my order on Nov 29th, 2018 and many promises later, the delivery was delayed till spring next year. I had just closed on a new house in Florida and needed to move in, so I bought an ICE car instead. This is the problem with the new car purchase model we are moving to across the board - even old ICE companies are in the order and wait mode today. It could be 6+ months for an ordered car to be delivered, which means some folks will be forced to move on to something else out of necessity.
At the beginning of 2020, one family sold all their vehicles and got a 2019 Ford Expedition with a $6K off deal from Ford. They were planning to add a second car mid year 2020 as an EV, but due to work from home and fewer miles driven than normal, they decided to postpone until spring or summer of 2022. Checking inventories from time to time and making plans for next year, they would love to have an EV but who knows what the coming months will unfold when it comes to production numbers.
It's not easy finding an EV that fits your needs and budget while still being available soon enough. Many people are looking at EVs these days, yet manufacturers can't keep up with demand. If you're considering buying an EV, plan ahead and make sure you understand the estimated delivery date before committing to a purchase. Don't forget that there are other options like renting or leasing if you need a vehicle right away.
The good news is that the EV market is growing and more models are becoming available. The bad news is that it's still a challenge to find one with an acceptable delivery date. I'm sure Rivian will eventually deliver on their promise, but in the meantime, there are other options out there for those who need a car now.
