Diagnostics scantool and networking is a topic of great interest to many mechanics and aspiring electrical engineers. It can be difficult to find information related to vehicle diagnostics, scantool, and networking, but with some detective work it's possible to gain access to the necessary tools.

The R1T has an OBD2 port on the bottom left of the dash, however there are no CAN bus lines present. Instead, there are 4 Ethernet pins and an activation pin similar to many European cars that use DOIP. Power on pin 16, ground on pins 4 and 5. With this harness in place, unfortunately the vehicle does not respond to standard DOIP messaging without a Rivian scantool.

On the passenger side kick panel nearest the door at least 5 CAN bus networks were discovered. Unfortunately DBC files are not available for deciphering what they are saying. A pre-made OBD-ethernet harness for $25 from Rivian's official parts supplier is available through Snap-On tools. Service mode options such as E_SOE_pack_max, E_SOE_pack_user_real_max, Lifetime_enery_consumptopn_kwh, MFL_TorqueAvailableMotoring may also be accessed.

Diagnostic software remains elusive though, even after contacting Rivian customer service who denied any access to their certified diagnostics software or service info. The best option may be to reach out to repair shops in states with strong “right to repair” laws which mandate vehicle manufacturers allow unaffiliated people access to repair manuals and diagnostic tools/software.

Overall, accessing diagnostic scantools and networking information requires patience and detective work. Though Rivian customer service was unhelpful in providing access to their own certified software and service info, other resources such as pre-made OBD-ethernet harnesses and repair shops in “right to repair” states may provide more fruitful results. With some effort, it is possible to gain access to the necessary tools.
