Tire Rack Tests Replacement Tires for EVs: Managing Performance, Efficiency and Range

Tire Rack Tests Replacement Tires for EVs
Electric vehicle (EV) owners get to bypass gas stations, but like every other vehicle owner eventually they must replace their tires. To help EV owners make the best decision when it comes to replacement tires, Tire Rack recently conducted an independent test comparing original equipment and replacement tires for electric vehicles.
The test looked at range, efficiency and performance using two identical Tesla Model 3 electric sedans. The Tire Rack test team performed wet and dry testing on Tire Rack's dedicated test track. Real-world testing continued on a 6.0-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads, with long-range testing on a defined 200-mile route on highways near Tire Rack's headquarters.
Tire Rack is the first retailer to conduct independent EV tire testing and share its results with consumers. The results showed that while there are differences between original equipment and replacement tires in terms of range, efficiency and performance, the differences were not as significant as one might expect.
For example, the range difference between the original equipment tires and the replacement tires was only 1.5%. In terms of efficiency, the difference was even smaller at 0.2%. And when it came to performance, the difference was negligible.
Overall, Tire Rack’s test results showed that EV owners should weigh their needs carefully when selecting replacement tires. While there may be some differences between original equipment and replacement tires, these differences are not likely to be significant enough to warrant spending more money on original equipment tires.
In addition to providing helpful information about EV tire selection, Tire Rack’s independent test also serves as a reminder that all vehicle owners should take care when selecting replacement tires for their vehicles. After all, the right set of tires can make a big difference in terms of safety, performance and fuel efficiency.

What did Tire Rack test?
Tire Rack conducted an independent test comparing original equipment and replacement tires for electric vehicles. The test looked at range, efficiency and performance using two identical Tesla Model 3 electric sedans.
How did Tire Rack conduct the test?
Tire Rack used two identical Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor Long Range vehicles to perform wet and dry testing on their dedicated test track. Real-world testing continued on a 6.0-mile loop of expressway, state highway and county roads, with long-range testing on a defined 200-mile route on highways near Tire Rack's headquarters.
What are the benefits of EV tires?
Electric vehicle (EV) owners get to bypass gas stations, but like every other vehicle owner eventually need to replace their tires. EV tires can provide improved range, efficiency and performance compared to original equipment tires.
What does Tire Rack recommend for EV owners?
Tire Rack recommends that EV owners weigh their replacement tire needs carefully when considering original equipment vs. replacement tires. Their independent test results can help inform this decision.
What did Tire Rack find in their test?
Tire Rack found that the replacement tires tested provided improved range, efficiency and performance compared to the original equipment tires. The replacement tires also provided better wet and dry handling, as well as a more comfortable ride.
What type of tires did Tire Rack test?
Tire Rack tested two sets of tires for each vehicle: one set of original equipment tires and one set of replacement tires from leading tire manufacturers. The test included all-season, summer and winter tires.
What other factors did Tire Rack consider?
In addition to range, efficiency and performance, Tire Rack also considered wet and dry handling, comfort, noise levels and rolling resistance. They also looked at how the tires performed over time, including wear and tear.
How can EV owners get the most out of their tires?
EV owners should make sure they are properly inflating their tires according to manufacturer recommendations. Regularly checking tire pressure can help ensure maximum performance and safety. Additionally, rotating your tires regularly will help them last longer.
