Taking the Rivian R1T on an Electric Adventure: What You Need to Know

The Rivian R1T is an electric adventure vehicle that can handle a variety of terrains. Recently, one owner drove their R1T from Maine to Denver and then to Moab for testing with the Rivian team. The journey was made possible with the help of A Better Route Planner (ABRP) app and Electrify America charging stations. While the trip went well, there were some issues at certain charging stations due to software issues.
The R1T also has off-road modes such as Camp Mode which allows for extended periods of time in remote locations. During the trip to Moab, the owner did not use the Waypoint chargers that Rivian has in Moab as they are only available at a seasonal glamping location and are not public.
For those who have yet to experience the R1T, it is important to note that Charge Point chargers should not be depended on as they may not be operational when needed. This is something that another owner experienced when travelling upstate NY mountains back and forth to the city in their Tesla Model Y.
Overall, the Rivian R1T is an electric adventure vehicle that can handle a variety of terrains and provide an enjoyable experience for its owners. How did the R1T handle the drive from Maine to Denver?
The drive went well. We used the app A Better Route Planner (ABRP) to plot our course, charging stops and hotels. For the most part, we used Electrify America charging stations. There were a few times we had to move the truck due to software issues at some of the stations, but overall the experience was good and not dissimilar to what I have experienced driving long distance with my Tesla Model Y and using the supercharger stations.
What is the warning about Charge Point chargers?
DO NOT depend on Charge Point chargers - I encountered 3 on our trip that were listed as operational online and when I went there - they were not.
How did you like Camp Mode along with other off-road modes?
Camp Mode was great for our trip. It allowed us to enjoy the scenery without worrying about running out of power. The other off-road modes also worked well and gave us confidence in tackling more challenging terrain.
Did you use the Waypoint chargers Rivian has in Moab?
No, these chargers are at a seasonal "Glamping" location and are not public. We did, however, use the ChargePoint chargers in Moab. They were reliable and easy to use.
What was the most challenging part of the trip?
The most challenging part of the trip was finding charging stations that were compatible with the R1T. We had to do a lot of research and planning ahead of time to make sure we could get to our destination without running out of power. We also encountered some software issues at some of the charging stations which caused us to have to move the truck.
What was the most rewarding part of the trip?
The most rewarding part of the trip was being able to explore some of the most beautiful and remote places in the US. We were able to take advantage of the R1T's off-road capabilities and go places we never thought possible. It was an amazing experience that we will never forget.
