Rivian's Innovative Solutions to Enhance Vehicle Security and Convenience
2022 Rivian R1S Review: Driving Impressions

Rivian has been working to make their vehicles more secure and convenient for users. The company offers a phone key feature that allows the user to unlock and start their vehicle with just their smartphone. However, this can be inconvenient when you are frequently entering and leaving your garage as it may cause the battery to drain quickly due to the frequent on/off cycle.

Unfortunately, there is no way to disable the Phone key without deleting it and reinstalling it. An alternative option would be to disable Bluetooth on your phone but this also means disabling interaction with other bluetooth devices such as headphones, smart watches, locks, lights, etc.

Tesla offers a Key Fob which many prefer over using their phone as a key. It works without issue every time and eliminates the need to do a little dance when you get to the door in order for the car to recognize the phone. This is not an option with Rivian's model however as their fob does not work in an active way - requiring you to physically push buttons on the fob to lock/unlock.

Rivian is currently exploring ways of making their vehicles more secure and convenient for users. One suggestion is an Apple Watch/iPhone app where (at your option) you can put in a 4 digit code to enter the vehicle. This could potentially prevent issues associated with having to pull out your phone and fumble to enter a code on a touch screen while in dangerous locations.

It appears that Rivian has taken some steps towards improving security by offering features like pin-to-drive but they still have some way to go before they can offer passive entry/exit into their vehicles similar to what most cars today have. Hopefully, they will soon be able to offer this via a software update so that users can simply walk up to their cars and get in without any hassle or worry about safety.

Is there a way to disable the Phone key rather than having to delete it and reinstall it?

Yes, you can disable Bluetooth on your phone to prevent it from communicating with your vehicle when you're close. However, this would also disable interaction with any other Bluetooth device you may use.

Does Rivian let the fob work in an active way?

No, you have to physically push the buttons on the fob to lock/unlock.

Is there an Apple Watch/iPhone app where (at your option) you can put in a 4 digit code to enter the vehicle?

Tesla already has a security option called "pin to drive." However, if your point continues to be that "nothing is perfect in life," then point taken. Being aware of your surroundings is more than that. It means keep moving to safety if you feel you might be a victim of a car-jack rather than approach your car. It means NOT being in a high-crime area to begin with.

Does Rivian offer passive key fobs?

Unfortunately, Rivian does not currently offer passive key fobs. However, the hardware may be there and it could potentially be offered via a software update.

Is there a way to disable the phone key without disabling Bluetooth?

Yes, you can disable the phone key by going into your phone's settings and turning off the "Bluetooth" toggle. This will prevent your phone from connecting to any Bluetooth device, including your vehicle. However, this will also prevent you from using other Bluetooth devices.
