Rivian Sets Ambitious Production Goals for Electric Vehicles in 2022 Despite Supply Chain Disruptions

Rivian is a relatively new company, founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe. Despite its youth, the company has made huge strides in the electric vehicle industry and is now competing with established companies such as Tesla. Rivian's goal for 2022 production numbers is 25,000 vehicles, which includes their R1T, Amazon delivery vans, and R1S models. This number may seem ambitious but CEO Robert Scaringe believes it can be achieved.

However, Rivian faces increasing supplier disruptions to its Normal, Illinois plant due to a shortage of semiconductor chips and wire harnesses. To combat this issue, the company has sent some of their on-site employees to suppliers’ facilities to assist in part production. They have not disclosed how many employees are helping or which suppliers they are assisting.

Rivian currently has an order book of around 70,000 for their R1T and R1S vehicles. This does not include the 100,000 Amazon vans also due by 2021. It will take significant effort from both Rivian and its suppliers to meet these demands. While Tesla took two and a half years to reach 125 cars per day, Rivian hopes to achieve this rate in just one year.

It is difficult to predict if Rivian will succeed in meeting their 2022 production goals. However, with the benefit of seeing Tesla's mistakes and successes, they may be able to make up ground quickly. With careful planning and proper execution of the supply chain process, Rivian could become a major player in the EV market within a few short years.

Rivian has also been investing heavily in research and development. They have recently acquired a number of patents related to electric vehicle technology, including battery cooling systems and autonomous driving software. This could give them an edge over their competitors as they strive to meet their 2022 production goals.

The company is also working on expanding its network of charging stations across the US, with plans for more than 500 locations by the end of 2021. Rivian's goal is to make it easier for customers to charge up wherever they are located, which should help increase sales numbers significantly in the coming years.
