Late to the Game? Consider a Rivian R1T Adventure Truck for Your Next Vehicle
Rivian's R1T is a great choice for those looking for an adventure truck that offers maneuverability, adjustable air suspension and 835 hp. With its smaller dimensions, it fits in most garages and has access to the exclusive Rivian Adventure Network. It is no surprise then that many people are reserving their own R1T, even if they already have another vehicle.
One such person recently put down $1000 on a whim after watching some YouTube videos about the R1T. They currently own a 2014 4Runner with 164,000 miles but wanted something more sporty and versatile. The new F150 Lightning was being built for them but they still had truck fever.
It is not crazy to reserve an R1T late in the game as long as you keep it generic and don't add too many extras. If you need a work truck then the larger bed and higher AC power output of the Lightning will be better suited. On the other hand, if you want an adventure truck then the R1T should be your go-to option. You can also look into swapping your recently delivered F150L with someone else's recently delivered R1T so both parties can claim the tax credit as first owners.
Those who pre-ordered years ago may not be happy that they may need to wait another year or two for their build, but at least they know there is a real product out there now. As for gas prices, depending on what kind of car you have now, it may be worth renting out your Lightening on Turo instead of flipping it since 3 rental days pays for the payment every month.
In conclusion, reserving an R1T late in the game is not crazy at all and could actually save you money in the long run. You just have to decide which model best suits your needs - whether it's a work or adventure truck - and then make sure you get the right package for you.

Is it crazy to reserve an R1T this late in the game?
No, reserving an R1T is not a sign of insanity. It is a sign of high intelligence and great taste. You can keep it generic and be surprised how fast you can get it.
What kind of truck do I need?
The Lightning will make a great work truck with its larger bed, much higher AC power output and compatibility with many ICE F150 work-related accessories. The R1T makes a great adventure truck with its smaller dimensions that make it more maneuverable off-road, its adjustable air suspension that gives up to 15" of ground clearance and its 835 hp that make it much faster than it needs to be.
Is there any way to swap my recently delivered F150L for someone else's recently delivered R1T?
You might be able to find someone here or another forum who’s willing to work a deal to swap your recently delivered F150L with their recently delivered R1T. At least you would both be able to claim the tax credit as the first owners of your respective original EVs.
Are those who have already been waiting for years insane?
No, those who have already been waiting for years are not insane. It is probably more legitimate to question the sanity of those who have already been waiting for years, and accept with little complaint that they may need to wait another year or two.
Is it worth saving money on gas by switching from a 4Runner to an R1T?
Everyone’s situation is different but if you have a 2009 Ridgeline, it gets 17mpg and costs $100/week to fill. That’s $4-500/mo. Your Lightning Pro payment is $600/mo. and free to charge on your solar. The Lightnings aren’t really flipping for a whole lot as well. You might be better renting it out on Turo. Based on what trucks rent for, 3 rental days pays for the Lightning every month. If your 4Runner is paid off but costs around $400 per month in gas, you may be better off reserving an R1T Lariat ER even with a trade in and cash to boot as you may end up paying around a net $450-500 per month payment after the ZEV savings.
