Is a Max Battery Pack Coming for the Rivian R1S? Here's What We Know

Rivian has yet to make any official announcements regarding the availability of a Max Battery Pack for the R1S. However, there have been several reports from customers who have placed pre-orders for the R1S that they were told by customer service reps that a higher capacity battery pack is in development and may be available at some point in the future. This could mean a battery with more capacity than the 135 kWh Long Range that's presently the only option for the R1S, but less than the 180 kWh Max that is only offered on the R1T.
Rivian has not provided any official information on this however, so all of the above amounts to not much more than speculation. It is possible that Rivian will offer an extended range battery pack for the R1S at some point in the future, but until they make an official announcement, it remains unclear when or if this will happen. In the meantime, customers who have placed pre-orders for the R1S should expect to receive their vehicles with the standard 135 kWh Long Range battery pack.
The R1S is scheduled to begin production in late 2021 and deliveries are expected to start in early 2022. This means that if Rivian does plan to offer a Max Battery Pack for the R1S, it is likely that it won't be available until 2023 at the earliest. It's also possible that the Max Battery Pack may never be offered for the R1S, as Rivian may decide to focus their efforts on developing new battery technologies instead.
In any case, customers who have pre-ordered the R1S should not expect to receive a Max Battery Pack anytime soon. However, they can still look forward to receiving their vehicles with the standard 135 kWh Long Range battery pack, which should provide plenty of range for most drivers. The R1S will also come with a host of other features such as an advanced suspension system, air suspension, and an adaptive cruise control system.
Rivian has yet to make any official announcements regarding the availability of a Max Battery Pack for the R1S, but it is possible that one could be offered at some point in the future. Until then, customers who have placed pre-orders for the R1S should expect to receive their vehicles with the standard 135 kWh Long Range battery pack when they become available in early 2022. In the meantime, Rivian will continue to develop new technologies and features for their vehicles, so customers can look forward to even more exciting features in the years to come.

Will I be able to select the Max Pack as my battery for an R1S configured in 2023?
It is unlikely that you will be able to configure your R1S with a Max Battery Pack, as it is no longer an option for the SUV. Rivian has hinted that there is a larger battery pack for the R1S under development, and the term "longer range" is one that was used by reps during chats on a couple of occasions. This could mean a battery with more capacity than the 135 kWh Long Range that's presently the only option for the R1S, but less than the 180 kWh Max that is only offered on the R1T. However, Rivian has not provided any official information on this yet. Last time customer service was contacted (May 2022), the max pack option was still in testing and pending approval, so it “should” be an option. We will have to wait and see.
