Introducing the R1 Shop

This month, Rivian is introducing the R1 Shop, an online experience that gives invited preorder holders the opportunity to swap their current R1 configuration for a new one with expected delivery in the next 6-8 weeks or sooner. The first shop invitations will be sent out to some of their earliest R1T preorder holders this week, and they’ll continue to add invites on a rolling basis based on factors such as preorder date, current configuration, and vehicle availability.

Rivian has been communicating about reconfiguring preorders since May, when they reached out to customers via surveys and Guide conversations. Their enthusiasm told them it was worth exploring, so they tested it across a spectrum of preorder dates to make sure it would be valuable.

However, many customers are still waiting for updates on their orders. Some have been asking Rivian every month for the past six months if they were confident in June/July deliveries. They said yes, but nothing has changed in their accounts other than deleting the words “Deliveries start Jan 2022”. This lack of communication has caused frustration among customers who feel like they’re being kept in the dark.

Some customers have seen progress though - someone reported seeing a R1S in San Diego yesterday, and those who ordered water bottles from Rivian received them on time. Those who placed deposits back in December 2018 are also likely to receive their vehicles soon.

Today, Rivian sent out an email stating there will be another update regarding the R1S, but no specifics were provided. Customers with June/July delivery windows are worried that their orders may get pushed back to 2023. If that happens, many of them will give up their deposits.

It remains to be seen what changes Rivian will make in terms of delivery times and configurations. Hopefully these updates will bring more clarity to customers who have been left in limbo for far too long.
