Roof Rack & Trailer Hitch

The BMW iX50 is a great car, but unfortunately there are no roof rack or trailer hitch options available from the dealer. Aftermarket options exist, however, so you can still get the accessories you need.

Thule now has fixtures and bars available for the iX50. In Australia, there are a couple of models with different load ratings. Tesla Model 3 reviewers have measured that an empty roof rack bar only has a 1.5-2% hit to range on the less aerodynamic iX.

In the US, StealthHitch is working on a 2" receiver hitch for the US market. They are eager to get an iX in Atlanta GA to measure it up, so if you can help out, let them know. Cutting into the electrical for trailer lights or a towing load would void the warranty, however.

If you're looking for a bike rack, Yakima Skybox 21 is a good option. The real max weight on the iX is unknown, but Thule fixed point mounted bars should do the trick. However, be aware that there's no way to let the car know that the hitch you have back there is not an object you're about to run into, so expect alarms when you try and go in reverse.

Finally, wind noise from roof racks is really loud with an electric vehicle. If you plan on getting one, make sure to purchase foot mount kits from Thule with correct diameter screws. In Australia, retractable tow hitches are not compliant with Australian standards yet, but BMW is developing one that should be available by August 23.
