What is the maximum AC charging rate of the iX?
The maximum charger within the iX is 48A, 11kW. The mobile level 2 charger included with the iX is only 40a, 9kW. If you want to purchase an EVSE device, some call it a level 2 charger but the charger is actually in each car, there are only a few 48A EVSE devices like Wallbox, called Pulsar Plus 48A.
Are there any other EV chargers available for the US market?
Yes, customers can purchase faster 11.5 kilowatt or 19.2kW wall-mounted charging stations. By installing a 240-volt outlet or wall charger, customers can reduce the time it takes to charge a depleted battery from 3 days to overnight. When it comes to charging, LYRIQ offers at-home Level 2 (AC) charge rates of up to 19.2 kW, which can add up to 52 miles of range per hour of charge8. It also features DC fast charging rates of up to 190 kW, enabling an estimated 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes6 of charging time.
Can I set my EVSE to 40A if I have a 50A circuit?
Yes, you can get around this if your EVSE is on a 50A circuit and you can set a limit in your EVSE app (as you can in the ChargePoint, Wallbox, Juicebox and other units - which do permit a 40A setting), by setting the "Current limit for AC charging" in the MyBMW app to "unlimited." Your car will then charge at the limit set in your hardware (EVSE) and ignore the myBMW app.
Does MyBMW app support higher than 48A AC charging?
No, the MyBMW app limits AC charging selections in 1A increments up to 16A, then jumps to 20A, then 32A, then 48A. I suspect MyBMW is configured for European circuits and hasn't been updated to reflect charging realities in the US.
